This Little Light of Mine

This Little Light of Mine

This little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
this little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
this little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Ev'rywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
ev'rywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
ev'rywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

About two thirds of the group I was hosting chose to ascend Mount Sinai on camels. The rest stayed back and played cards in the minimalist motel at the foot of the mountain. Camels are independent and even a bit nasty at times. I would swear that some went closer to the edge of the cliffs than necessary. When I dismounted near the top, my camel spat at me. "You are too big for the camel," said my ten-year-old guide.

We were all told to bring flashlights as we would be descending the mountain in the dark and there were no railings. One by one the flashlights dimmed out. No one said to bring extra batteries. I will always be grateful to Gary, who brought extra batteries, not only for himself, but for all of us. Some of us sang to cover up our fear, "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine."

We are reminded in Baptism that we are to let the light of Jesus be reflected in our lives. What I think of when I sing this hymn is that I will always be thankful for those who bring extra batteries along, for my light dims out quite often. Among other choices we make, I try to choose fellow travelers who carry extra batteries.

When my light grow dim, O Lord, recharge my batteries or give me a wise friend from batteries plus. Amen!
