When You Feel Like Giving Up…
· Kerry Shook
“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time
we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”
Have you ever fallen and felt like you couldn’t get up? Your adversary would love to keep you pinned under the guilt and shame of bad choices. These have been formable weapons in his arsenal against a Christ follower. Before long he uses them to develop the mindset that forgets what we should always remember. When you’ve blown it or experienced a failure or set back that knocks you off balance and you feel you can’t get up, you need to remember two truths that are unchangeable realities. They are universal.
First, remember how big God is. Take your eyes off the problem or the pain and consider the greatness of God in comparison. I’m not trying to minimize the hurt or simplify the problem you may be facing. They are real and painful. You may have to deal with unavoidable consequences that seem insurmountable. Still, God is bigger! The psalmist put it like this in Psalm 8:3-4 (TLB) “When I look up into the night skies and see the work of your fingers–the moon and the stars you have made–I cannot understand how you can bother with mere puny man, to pay any attention to him!” After a time of national failure the prophet Isaiah encouraged Israel with a reminder of how big God is in Isaiah 40:28-31 (TLB). “Don’t you yet understand? Don’t you know by now that the everlasting God, the Creator of the farthest parts of the earth, never grows faint or weary? No one can fathom the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the tired and worn out, and strength to the weak. Even the youths shall be exhausted, and the young men will all give up. But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” No matter what has happened in your life that has caused you to feel like giving up, remember how big God is.
Second, remember how much God cares. Others may not care. You may be treated with indifference and even disdain but the Bible tells us in 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.” Wow! God cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully! How much does God care? Jesus said, “I am the good Shepherd. The good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” John 10:11 (NIV) He showed how much He cares on the cross when He gave His life for ALL our sins! Don’t give up my friend. If you’re not dead, God’s not done!
